Week 6

Final Creature Design

This week we managed to finalise our character design. We decided that we liked the tan colour scheme for the bear because it was the most similar to the skin and hair colour of my friend. We also preferred the look of the scarf with coral/peach music notes over the white because we thought it had a softer look rather than the white which strongly contrasted with the red scarf.

3D Creature Model - Mini Version

Emily and I modelled a small 'chibi' version of our creature to pose as the friend's keychain or figurine. Instead of trying to composite this model into our film plate, we want to try 3d print it with the help of our friend who uses the 3D printing labs at AUT. We thought this would be a good chance for use to try something new as we have never 3D printed before and it would save us time from having to composite it.

Once we got it 3D printed I spent a few hours over the weekend sanding it down to get rid of the lines and make it as smooth as possible. Then I gave it to Emily so she could paint it.

Updated Storyboard

Based on some feedback from our lecturer, he suggested that we include some sad or angry scenes in our montage because at the moment it all looks a bit too happy - by depicting the ups and downs of the characters, their friendships will feel more rounded and organic since it's realistic for friends to go through hardships. Therefore will will add two new scenes; one scene where the creature and friend comfort their other friend who is going through a break up, and another scene where the creature drops their ice cream and looks disheartened.

Another suggestion my lecturer made was to change the last scene of our film montage. Originally the last scene was of our creature closing the oven - however I see why my lecturer pointed this out because it doesn't feel like it has much purpose or impact. Therefore instead the last scene will be a shot of the friends watching a sunset. This feels much more appropriate because a sunset has connotations of something ending which is fitting since the montage section is coming to an end. A sunset can also signify the passing of a loved one which undoubtedly can help portray the idea that their friend passed away and are coming to terms with it. Especially since this is the last scene where the creature is present.

VFX Scene List

To make production easier and more organised, I put together a list of all our scenes that will need editing and we equally assigned the scenes to ourselves. We tried to assign multiple shots of the same scene to one person for consistency reasons. Plus it's easier assigning whole scenes to one person rather than splitting the shots up.
