Week 10

Scarf Simulation

We planned on simulating our head scarf to further establish our bear in a realistic setting. My partner, Emily, initially tried to simulate it in Houdini but had trouble getting it to work. Some people said that our scarf was likely too high-res so we retopologised it as low-res as we could without losing detail. However Emily still had trouble with simulating it in Houdini so I decided to try learn Maya's nCloth feature to simulate the scarf. It did not take too long to pick up and definitely looked much better than what we started with but it was still looking quite rough. One of the main issues I had was finding the most effective spot to pin the scarf. Depending on the bear's animation the pinned areas would create weird folds in the fabric.

nCloth simulation in Houdini

Thankfully once I experimented more I was able to create something decent. It was not a perfect simulation since it had small little clips in it but it was the best outcome we had reached at that point.

However Emily had another go simulating the low poly scarf in Houdini and managed to get it working. The result was much smoother and it did not take that long to cache. Although I had already used nCloth to simulate two of my eight scenes, I decided to keep them since they looked fine and proceeded to simulate it in Houdini. I used the master file where Emily created the template for the scarf simulation and pasted them intro my scene files. This was an incredibly efficient way for us to do this simulation since I assume it would have taken us twice the amount of time with nCloth.

Re-texture Head Scarf

Since we ended up using the low poly version of the scarf we discovered that the textures where not showing because this version did not have UVs. Although Emily UV unwrapped it as closely to the original model as possible, our original textures did not line up. Therefore I retextured the low poly scarf in substance painter. I basically replicated the original texture I made but the only difference was the fabric smart material I used. Unfortunately they did not have the fabric texture I initially used but managed to find something similar that still achieved our desired look.
