3D Environment assets
I started making some assets for our 3D environment. I decided to start with more simple assets such as the plants which I drew in Procreate and then applied to a plane in Maya. For the first round of testing whether my drawings looked good in a 3D space, I discovered that I didn't like the lily pad with the painted highlight because when I start to populate them in my scene, it might not match the direction of light in my environment. But other than that I was happy with everything else and did not have to edit the textures.
Houdini Simulations
I also started to tackle my two Houdini simulations; a fur simulation and a water simulation. For the fur simulation, I wanted to learn how to use the grooming/ hair tools to create a light fuzz texture to the bear. Since I am still unfamiliar with Houdini's functions, I did struggle a lot. I managed to create a short frizzy hair groom but couldn't figure out how to get rid of it in areas I did not want it - like the eyes for example. After much trial and error I decided to start from scratch and take a different approach by manually painting on the fur and avoiding the areas I didn't want it. Although I'm sure there was a more efficient way in doing this (using a brush to subtract the fur rather than adding it) I managed to achieve my goal. However I could not get the frizz effect to work but I'm sure its something I'll be able to fix. I was not able to properly preview my render since I need to install redshift but once it's set up, I'll be able to tweak the fur until I get the desired result.
Test 1 : Managed to get the frizz effect on the guides to show
Test 2: Manually painted on fur but no frizz
Title Screen Animation
I thought it would be a cute idea to have a hand written title screen with doodles to complement the physical paper bucket list the main character wrote in the film. I started by doing some concepts in Procreate to see how I might want it to look before doing some test animations.
Then after consulting Emily, we decided we liked number 5 the most so I proceeded to do a test animation. Thankfully it had the jittery/ hand drawn look we were trying to achieve so I didn’t have to clean up to much.
