Mid-sem Break

Filming Pt. 2

Over the break, my main focus was to organise another shooting day. First I had to contact a high school teacher to see if we could use the school pool as a filming location and also tried to organise about 10-15 people to act as background characters for our lecture scene. Fortunately this all worked out so we were about to include these two scene into our film schedule.

We had hoped to get all our filming done over those two days but unfortunately it didn't go so smoothly. On Tuesday we didn't manage to film the sunset scene because by time we were read, it had gotten too dark and as for the break up scene, we simply forgot to film it. I believe this was due to having a very tight schedule and trying to print out our photos for the Wednesday morning shoot before Warehouse Stationery closed.

Then on Wednesday, Emily was feeling very unwell so she had to home. However this meant that we weren't able to film the scenes that I was in because there was no one to be behind the camera. Therefore I improvised and decided to still hit the planned locations and take photos of the chrome ball. but before I left for the city, I attempted to reshoot the opening bedroom scene. The lighting is best in my room between 7:30 - 8:00am but after that point, its quite dim because my room does not receive the best light. Unfortunately that morning there were clouds blocking the sun so lighting wasn't the best but I still decided to film. Once we finished I made the call to postpone filming the closing scene (which is also in my room) because we were starting to run behind schedule and the lighting was very poor.

The most success part of Wednesday was definitely filming the lecture scene. Although we got all the shots we needed, it didn't necessarily start so smooth. Originally I had planned to try use a gimbal for the opening shot but had a lot of trouble setting it up. Then once I finally got it working, I found that the camera still picked up my hand shaking so I resorted to using a tripod for the whole scene. Then for the final shoot of the day we had planned to re-film our actor exiting a film shop. However we were unable to film that too because we forgot to pack the same jumper the actor was wearing the scene right before it - meaning it would look like she somehow magically walked out of the shop in a different jacket.

Although this shoot didn't quite go to plan due to unfortunate circumstances, I learnt a lot from our mishaps and can improve on these things to ensure our next shoot goes smoothly. Our next scheduled shoot is the first week back after break.

Editing Photos

In our end scene, there is a close up shot of the girl looking through her developed film photos. Therefore I edited the photos we took while shooting to look match a film camera aesthetic. I used Adobe Lightroom to edit my photos. I'm fair happy with the result but if I wasn't so pressed for time (since we only had a few days to edit them before needing them for our shoot) was put them into photoshop and add a slight blur to the edges of the photos. However most of that detail won't really be seen on camera anyway so they are fine as they are. Here are a few edited photos:

There is another shot in our end scene where we see a photo of their deceased friend holding the keychain to hopefully indicate that it belonged to her. Originally we were going to have a random person be in the photo but after talking to Edyn's parents, they said they were happy for us to use a photo of her instead. Luckily her dad managed to find a photo that we could edit so Emily had a crack at it first using photoshop. Once she finished editing, we both agreed that it still didn't quite look right so then I used Procreate (a digital painting software) to try define it more with hand painted highlights/shadows and did minimal colour adjustments.

Although the bear seems to stand out a bit now, the readability of the bear is much clearer which is necessary because the small details likely won't be picked up on camera.
